| What is a sinus headache? |
| |
Sinus headaches are associated with the swelling of the membrane lining in the sinuses (spaces adjacent to the nasal passages). The sinuses are the bony, air-filled cavities in the head that connect to the nose through small openings. The sinuses produce mucus that cleans and moistens the membranes of the nose and throat.
A sinus headache is a tender pain that occurs when the sinuses become congested. The congestion occurs from pressure that is exerted by swollen or inflamed tissue in the sinus cavities due to air, pus, and mucus causing a vacuum.
Sinus headache may feel like tightness and pain behind the eyes and in the ears and relentless pounding in your head and face. |

The key to relieving the symptoms of a sinus headache is to reduce sinus swelling and inflammation and facilitate mucus drainage from the sinuses. Not all headaches are caused by nasal passage problems and sinusitis. You may be experiencing, tension headaches or a simple migraine. The reason the sinus cavity is affected, is because the migraine which branches to the jaw, forehead and cheeks, produces pain around the sinus cavity. |
